Any natural gold nugget over one troy ounce from California is a rare thing these days. The state has banned all river dredging (the main source from finding gold nuggets) to protect the salmon runs. This gold nugget is a beauty with a very smooth river worn surface and triangular shape. It has a heavy feel in the hand and is impressive to hold. There are a few pick marks on this one and the prospector told me the story of how this one was hard to see in a mucky part of the river and was nicked by his pic. This does not deter from the value for most collectors as it is part of the "story" about this rare find from California.
As a gold dealer and someone who gets to see a lot of gold nuggets. It is rare to see a collection such as this one with large gold nuggets from so many unique locations in North America. The collection comes from a single prospector who is a retired police officer and for the last 30 years, he spent six weeks every summer prospecting for gold.
Weight: 52.4 grams (1.68 Troy Ounces)
